On this tour we will take a step back into the working of a very modern thinking Scottish Wool Mill in the village of New Lanark. In the late 17 hundreds into the early 18 hundreds, David Dale and then Robert Owen created a social revolution for the working classes in Scotland. The work was still hard and often dangerous but there were many positives to working in this modern thinking mill. Free health care was provided for all the workers and their children, the local shop used coupons allowing the workers to buy high quality goods at a much discounted rate compared to the local town of Lanark and every child had access to the school.
Owen saw the benefits of treating his workforce fairly and this living museum is testament to his great foresight. The mill is set on the banks of the river Clyde in a beautiful location and simply has to be visited to be fully understood.
